Connecting Garden Room to house electric supply

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Update- thanks for the advice. Work has been completed by someone who was recommended to me, did a good job at a fair price and explained everything well, but I was happy I had info so I knew what he was talking about. He gave me 2 options and 2 quotes. Will use him again! Hi, I’ve had a garden room built next to my house, the electrician has been and stated I need a new fuse box as mine is old and no electrician would contact the supply without changing the box. There is a spare fuse in my house fuse box as I live in a one bed house. The garden room will be a sewing room so only sewing machine, TV, table lamp would be plugged in. Having paid a fair bit for this room I really can’t afford for a new fuse box to be fitted. Do I really need it to be changed?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

No you don't necessarily have to have a new consumer unit (CU). As long as the existing one is in good condition, and is serviceable, you can have a new supply to your garden room. There are other options you can explore that don't require a new circuit from the CU, and a good electrician would not limit your choices like this. There are always alternative ways of achieving what you need. Get several quotes and don't be discouraged.

If you run an armoured cable from the existing box it’s considered a supply cable so doesn’t need rcd protection at the consumer / fuseboard end, just the correct mcb. An rcd garage unit can be fitted in the outbuilding to protect circuits . I doubt very much that your current distribution board is so bad that it can’t be connected to because if that was the case he should be looking to issue a danger notice. Shouldn’t take much to achieve even if it took SOME additional work at the fuseboard end. You could also install another fused disconnect unit directly off mains and do it that way. There’s options.
