Backer board on top of wetroom tray?
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.30 PM
Hi all, I've got a fitted wetroom tray, previously lino laid on top that's been removed. Looking to lay some mosaic tile, had conflicting info online as to whether can go straight tile adhesive on to the wetroom tray or whether it needs a backer board cut to go on top). Will be doing backer board over floorboards, but not sure on wetroom tray. Any advise very welcome. Thank you, John

Hi if you have a pre shaped wet room tray former you will lay tiles directly on top and it should be level with your backer boards. And all bedded on adhesive i pressume

I won’t do it. No no for me.
Replace the tray with the one you can tile over and make use of the tanking kit.

Backer boards should be glued and screwed to floor boards or bonded with flexible tile adhesive on solid floors.
If whole floor is to be tiled the backer boards need to finish level with the tray to give a seamless finish.
Also best to fix a tanking membrane to the shower walls that runs down the walls and into the tray so that if any moisture penetrates the tiles it runs straight into the drain.
