Water falling off patio in wrong direction with no drainage -how to rectify?

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

EDIT- thank u Dave and L&D landscaping. I will ask our landscaper how he will rectify it. Am I right in thinking that the only way to rectify multiple 4 mm lippage in t porcelain tiles aswell as t water fall being directed forward instead of backwards (as agreed verbally but evidenced by the gravel trap) is to bring up all t tiles and relaid? Is it reasonable for me to say my confidence in a good job being done is now lost and refuse final payment and get a different person to do t job? Thanks, much appreciated. Hi all, we’ve just had a 30 square metre porcelain patio laid at the rear of the garden. The back and side hedges are retained by sleepers 60 cm high due to a top tier being dug out. The agreed plan was for the water to fall off the patio to the back and sides to a 3 in x 4 in gravel trap in front of the 3 sides of sleepers, I did question whether this was sufficient drainage for a patio that size and I was assured it was-is that right? Well we have just tested t drainage with some buckets of water and t water is actually falling forward onto t grass where there is no drainage but even worse as there is a graduated dip in t patio it is pooling to one area creating a puddle at t front lip caused by t edging which then eventually spills into one area of grass. This will cause problems with our lawn. There is also smaller pooling elsewhere due to some slabs being 4mm higher/lower than the adjacent slab. Is that acceptable? When I asked I was told yes. However I am worried about pools of water causing ice in t winter with my young children. I feel t only way to remedy it is to bring up all t porcelain (which will probably break t slabs) and then measure t fall and relay it. Is this unreasonable? I’ve paid half of the total cost so far and t final payment is expected tomorrow, is it fair of me to withhold payment? I don’t hav confidence in them rectifying this and would prefer to get someone else-legally do I need to let them try to do it? If not could I ask for a refund as the cost of getting someone else would b much higher than t money we haven’t yet paid especially as we will have to buy all new porcelain again. Thank you for your responses, it is much appreciated.

Hi, what I would do is get a 2nd opinion before you spend any more money, it sounds to me like they have there falls the wrong way? But without looking at the situation it is impossible to make a fare judgement. Would be happy to have a look for you if local. The only way to get the direction of water the correct way is to re lay them I'm adraid but on the flip side you could also get away with a 4" gravel trap on the edge of paving to stop run off down the lawn.

Hi Sarah, when it comes to any patio first of all on my list if i was to carry out the work is drainage and the correct ratio fall. As long as it’s falling away from the house it’s fine, with regards to pools of water doing it with buckets is much difference to natural rain fall. Either way this sounds to me like it needs to be rectified by the contractor and hold payment until your satisfied with the work and there are no pools of water sitting around on the porcelain slabs. Aco drainage I would of thought to be considered on your description for the porcelain job. Hope this helps.

Hi Sarah, Google tool-less leveling system it what I use everytime on porcelin I'd get the contractor to rectify if you're not happy with the work. Personally it sounds like there falls are reversed. And also as stated an aco drain, especially with porcelin I've never installed porcelin and not put an aco. Porcelin paving if the falls are correct shouldn't hold water. Did they also use a toggle system when laying aswel as its fool proof for getting the tiles flush with each other, so if fall rates are correct and tiles are flush no water should be back falling or pooling.
