Is it possible to have a plug socket in front of a chimney breast above a gas fire?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

Hey everyone, I hope that you can help. I am looking to place a tv above a gas fire. The gas fire will have a fire surround and mantlepiece that comes along with the fire surround. Can a plug socket be placed in front of the chimney breast above the gas fire? If a gas fire is not recommended can I go for an electric fire instead? Thanks in advance for any advice

When fitting anything electrical you have to mindful of external influences, in this case the heat from the fire. You need to assess whether or not the heat will be sufficient to cause an issue with the electrical socket or appliance. If not, then as long as the socket satisfies all the other requirements of BS7671:2018 (which it should if a competent electrician is installing it) then it will be ok. One thing to be mindful of is drilling the chimney breast, make sure it doesn't have any affect on the flue inside. Thanks.
