Laying Indian sandstone slabs but not sure what gaps should be

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

Hi, I'm going to be laying new Indian sandstone slabs but not sure what gaps should be. I've bought a project pack of mixed size Indian sandstone slabs made up of 900 x 600mm, 600mm x 600mm, 600mm x296mm and 296mm x 296mm. I thought I'd leave 10mm gaps but I can't see how that would work with these sizes. I've laid them out dry but can't easily get the gaps to line up. Is it a case of customizing the joints as i lay them but I still cant see how it'll work with the 296 sizes when they butt up to a 600, there'll be room for 8mm only. Is there a recommended definite size for every pack of slabs? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there I normally would have a gap of around 15mm to allow for slight variation in sizes unless they are sawnhope this to be helpful

Natural stone can be 5mm plus or minus the actually size stated so joints can range from 10 to 15mm 0r 8mm to 13mm if you prefer a slightly tighter joint some joints will have to be slightly bigger than others though plus use a sting line for level an line joints will look better

Laying the Indian sandstone can depend on the quarry it came from. Is it calibrated or Uncalibrated. I have had the sandstone where the sizes just don’t work. You have to remember as consistent the product can be it’s hand cut and you do get variations. Mostly though a bit of wiggling and swapping the slabs around you can make it work to approximately 7-10mm gaps. If you’re using a brush in pointing mix make sure the joints are around 10mm deep otherwise it’s expensive or too shallow and it will fail. Hope this helps.

There is no set gap with Indian sandstone it's best to dry lay an area and adjust the joint to suit yourself
