Do I need a Plasterer or a builder then a plasterer?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.11 PM
I have 3 upstairs rooms and the hall stairs and landing that need wall, ceilings, skirting and architrave replaced. 2 of the rooms are bedrooms, the other room is a small toilet that has tiling on the lower part of the walls and an old damp problem on 1 wall. The stairwell is high with a half landing, there’s a dado rail in the hall and up the stairs and the plaster in the under stairs cupboard needs to be replaced too. Do I need a builder to get the prep work done then a plasterer or will a plasterer do all the prep as well?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Personal preference really do you research, get some prices and compare sometimes builders charge over the top for plastering some are fair, honestly for a better finish 80% the time getting a main plasterer in to do it they take more care, as a plasterer myself I take pride in my work hope this helps, and sorry most plasterers will complete prep work start to finish. But yet again do some research

It entirely depends on which plasterer you get , If its me ,i do all prep work damp hacking off etc ,Then some spreads wont even move things out of the way ,scrape a bit of paper off the wall (just moan its not ready ) good luck

If I’m reading correct, you are looking for all skirting, architrave etc to be removed then refitted? If this is the case, personally, a good plasterer will do most of the prep work there selves and prefer it as there’ll be less damages to repair pre plastering, but the replacement of any 2nd fix carpentry I would get someone separate for that, don’t go for a man that can do all, because it’s most likely he can’t, Not to a high standard anyway!
Hope this helps 🙏

As the other plasterer has just said. Don’t get a builder in as they will put their money on top for getting the trades in. Basically some builders are just middle men, unless you can get a honest one. But they hard to come by.
By the sounds of it you just need a plasterer & carpenter. A experienced plasterer will rip skirting, dado rails of and prep walls before plastering.
You may find a plasterer who can do carpentry as well on Mybuilder
