Roofing

I would like to add a layer of boarding to my garage roof.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

I built the existing roof to replace the original coririgated roof about 30 years ago. Over the years I have replaced the felt a few times. From the inside the ply looks to be in fair condition, so I would prefer to over board it. (DIY) before refelting. Question 1.... If the old felt is flat can I simply over board it.if not. Question 2 ....If I remove the existing felt, which could be a pain to do, can I just lay the new boarding onto the old or do I need to seal it with a primer or something else first before securing with nails or screws. Question 3.... Is the Wickes 2 layer self adhesive system worth using as a DIYer. Thanks for your time. Dave

Personally I use torch on felt ..never tried self adhesive..if the old boarding is not rotten or damaged why do you want to board on top of it ..if a 3 layer torch on felt is used the flat roof should last 30 years at least ..I would remove old felt before boarding on top and use a weather proof board not plywood ..without seeing the roof it’s difficult to advise but i would stay away from 2 layer self adhesive felt from Wickes ,especially if you have already had to replace it once .i would recommend .debotec and technatorch ..torch on flat roof should only be done by a pro though
