Vanity sink and gaps in sealant

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

Hi The vanity sink in my bathroom has cracks and gaps in the sealant between it and the wall. What is the best way to fix this?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Always remove old and cracked material and reseal again with a quality silicone. Always seal the edges when there is weight in the sink, so fill the sink up before sealing. Always use the right sealant spreader too, a finger will not give a quality seal and will introduce bacteria into the sealant that will cause discolouration in the future potentially.

Remove the existing sealant and replace with a good quality silicone, it may be necessary to first fill the gap with clear silicone (kept to a low level) when dry top up with white or a colour (say grey) ensuring all surfaces are dry. If the vanity unit is loose when old sealant is removed the addition of a metal bracket secured to the wall will also assist to reduce the gap and prevent movement.

Remove all previous mastic. Clean up the area. Give the sink unit a check ensure it is level and no obvious damage and the unit and basin / sink are secure. Fill up the basin / sink just under the overflow. Apply new sanitary sealant with anti mould and bacteria properties. Smooth sealant using the correct method wet finger, lint free damp / wet cloth or mastic tool to ensure complete seal. Check work for any inconsistencies. Ask if client is happy and or has any questions.

If the basin is cracked I strongly recommend to change it completely before it falls on somebody's feet. If there is a gap between wall and basin . I recommend to clean properly old silicone and put new one.
