How many junction boxes are too many?
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.11 PM
A new build dorma which is to have a fiberglass roof, will conceal 5 junction boxes above the ceiling space. All these boxes are connecting the lights. Is this safe? Will it pass EICR if I make sure the inspector gets to see the wiring around these junction boxes? Are there any EICR safety concerns around inaccessible junction boxes?

Junction boxes are to be non maintainable type. Needs to be looked at and tested before the ceiling goes back.

All junction boxes have to be accessible unless you use permanent connectors .Not mechanical, ie screws !!!! If you are using junction boxes make sure they will fit through the hole made for the lighting for testing and maintenance purposes.

Get an electrician in to do it.
There is NO need for junction boxes hidden in the ceiling if wired correctly.
If you have surface fittings the cables come out there.
If you have down lights, those points are where the cables are done.

If it’s just for lights could your electrician not take the feed to the switches and then loop out the lights that way you shouldn’t need any junction boxes to be hidden

maintenance free junction boxes can technically be covered, an older style junction box with screw terminals typically round are not maintenance free and should not be covered.
I would recommend have an electrician correctly extend the cabling and remove the junction boxes all together
