Dripping gutters on new fascias

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.11 PM

I've had uPVC cladding over my wooden fascias and soffits, with replacement gutters. There are drips at the gutter junctions for several hours after it stops raining, suggesting that water is pooling in the gutters. Is it normal to have water stuck in the gutter and should the (new) seals allow dripping like this? I've also noticed that there are drips off the bottom of the fascias in places and am concerned that this is water from the roof missing the gutter, rather than the fascia being rained on directly. To get a better gradient to the downpipe the new gutters were fixed lower than the old ones at one end, and you can now see the white fascias above the gutter in places. Is it normal for the roof felt to not run into a gutter, and could this be the cause of the water dripping off the fascia?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

New guttering should not leak at the unions ther is a insert line within the union if this is passed with the guttering it will leak from unions. Warter dripping of the facias most probably felt ass rotted back beyond facias line

It sounds like you’ve had your fascias over cladded which is wrong for a start. You’re fascias and soffits should be levelled through and gutters should be under a eaves tray, the eaves tray is a replacement for the sarking felt that falls into the gutter, over cladding means your original tile overhang is reduced and added to the fact that the gutters are now too low will cause a back flow, it is also possible that you have a blocked down pipe this will cause the the seams of the gutters to leak water or come over the top of the gutters as it can’t drain away properly. A 10mm fascia board isn’t a bad way if done properly, the fascias, soffits and gutters should be removed, rafter feet cut back and a 25mm treated timber should be screwed to the cut back rafters, a vented soffit should be fixed and then the 10mm fascia board, gutters and eaves tray. Unfortunately there’s still some companies that get away with over cladding rotten timbers and causing major issues, this 10mm fascia board is called a fascia board not a capping board.

Your guttering could have been installed correctly, it seems to not have the correct fall and is not correctly fitted at the joints as there is a certain way the pipe should sit between two points (for expansion)

Sounds like a poor job... all joints should be sealed when fitting to make double sure they never leak... you shouldn’t be able to see any fascia above the gutter and it sounds like the water is coming off the tile and straight down the fascia, he should have fitted eaves trays under the tiles to allow the water to go straight into the gutter... hope this helps

You shouldn’t be able to see the white fascia on the top of your guttering. They should be drip felt from under your tile down the top half of the fascia and into the guttering. By the sound of your description the old felt has been remove (or maybe rotten away) I would suggest fitting new EPS trays (a tray that fits under old felt and comes over the top of the fascia and into the gutters). The best thing about these trays is they never rot away like felt do. So it’s a fit and forget job. Hope this helps a little. Leonard

Hi firstly you should never put the upvc fascia and soffits over the top of the old wooden ones,it will cause them to rot and chances are if a workman or company has done it in that way they probably haven't vented it either which will also damage your roof.the felt should definitely go into the gutter as that is the purpose of it.i see these problems time after time because of cladding over the old wood.theres only one way to do this work and thats to take all the old down and fully replace it,and also vent the new system and put a ridgid eaves protector in
