Repositioning Stairs in a small Victorian Terrace

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.10 PM

Hello, I am trying to think of ways to create more space in the house, and especially put in a downstairs bathroom. If we had a normal staircase at the side of the house then a downstairs toilet would be feasible, however our stairs are down the middle so we wanted to see if we can actually move it. We don’t mind losing a bit of scape from the master bedroom. Please help!!! Vanessa

It's perfectly feasible to move the staircase - but every house is different. You would need to alter the upper floor joists - and support any exposed ends. So determining which way the joists run is an important first start. You'd need a structural engineer to advise on the required new supports. It's also essential that the resultant floor plans are worked out - so that you are happy with the layout and change to the space at both levels. A quick 'feasibility plan' could help you to test out the possibilities.

The above answer is correct - in short anything is possible, it just depends on your budget and what you want to achieve. The simplest solution is usually the easiest and cheapest.
