Are there alternatives for using Lime on old houses?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.53 PM

I hear that old houses need to 'breath' to have it redone in lime would be expensive I think? can modern materials be used or would that be a waste of time and money I live in an old cottage - all held together with woodchip,I am a single women and live with my 19 year old who is very keen to do some of the work on the house to save money. He is desperate to remove the old plaster from his bedroom walls and replace the ceiling and the lath & plaster, which to me sounds like a job for a professional. He has bought all the tools for the plastering himself. It has become a constant battle between us of what I should let him do.( he did plaster a wall in his room, which for a complete beginner wasn't bad) When I get builders around to give advise he always says they don't know what they are talking i.e recommending damp proofing not suitable for old properties? he wants to use the old l traditional method of lime which I hear is not the easiest to work with. Please a bit of manly advise for the struggling widow!! Thanks Annie

Walls need to be lime/sand mortar usually done in 2 coats, final coat can be rubbed up with a sponge if its just a cottage finish. Try not to line the walls with plaster board or any other board these old buildings need to breath to stay dry. I would without fail remove any old lathes and plaster to the ceiling.

Hello Annie, Yes lime plastering is a craft and a professional needs to undertake the work, it also then needs to be lime washed several times ..which then rubs off on your nice black or dark colour clothes when touched, however you can also buy special lime paint nowadays but this does cost!...the ceiling will be fine to either take down and board or just board over the existing,,,as for the walls why not suggest battening them out and then fixing plasterboard to the battens..if there's a possibility of damp, put a polythene membrane on the wall first...sorry I cant be of much more help but I cant see the project.. All the best.
