Combi boiler not staying ignited to heat water

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.10 PM

Hi, I've a fairly old valiant combi boiler that's in the garage. Since the bad storm today it's not staying ignited to heat the water. Usually if this happens , I switch off at the mains , turn on & away we go but not this time. Central heating works fine ,all rads are hot with no cold spots. Only indication on the boiler are 3 lights , 2 of which are flashing green to indicate that the central heating is working but there isnt anything regarding water. Pressure is up & I cant see any leaks. Any advice would be appreciated as I'm a bit weary calling just anyone for fear of being ripped off. If I'm going to need a new boiler, which is best without costing the earth & who do I call, plumber or gas engineer? Thanks in advance Julie

have your boilers diverter valve checked, for the boiler you need a gas safe registered engineer, even better if he is a gas safe plumber,as for being ripped off most plumbers /gas engineers are reputable people, you should also get at least three quotes for any work and also check peoples qualifications, and public liability insurance ,it should also be remembered we are business we have to make a profit to stay in business.

You need to choose someone who specialises in boiler repairs, a Vaillant boiler should last at least 25 years. Get someone who can give you a fixed price boiler repair.

Hi Julie, It could be one of a few things on the boiler. The best thing to do is to a gas safe registered engineer or you can get a one-off fixed price fix from Vaillant https://www.vaillant.co.uk/homeowners/repairs-servicing/repair-options/. They will fix whatever needs to be fixed. If the boiler is beyond economical repair get a new boiler ( new combi replacement can be as low as £1,750 inc vat for a Worcester Bosch with a 10 year parts and labour guarantee or £2,000 inc vat for a 12 year guarantee ) Hope this helps Ian @ Heat Leicester
