Outside security lights
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.10 PM
Hi. I have an outside waterproof, RCB double socket on the outside of my house and want to know whether I can plug in an outside light using 3 core flex and a 5 amp fuse. The outside light will be located about 7 feet above the socket. Would appreciate to know whether this is safe and if so what type of flex/cable is the best for this type of job? Thanks

Hi
Technically, if done right, it will work and be safe. Although it certainly isn’t how an electrician would do it. In an ideal world in the long term, the security light would be hard wired into a switched fused spur with RCD protection incorporated in some way.
You may find this is what the manufacturers require in their instructions, thus rendering your plug top method non compliant. So I would approach with caution. Best bet.....get an electrician to have a look.
Hope that helps.

Hi if you put a plug top on its classed as a portable appliance so 1mm 3 core flex along with a 3 amp fuse will be more than adequate

Hi , firstly I would refer to manufacturer's guidance on install of light. As the light will be a substantial distance from the socket I would suggest it not be installed using flex. This does not provide protection against UV damage (sunlight) nor will it be protected againts cold. Overtime this WILL crack and cause problems. There is flex on the market which will do this, Artic blue. But its blue and looks horrible. If there is a socket more local inside the property, bedroom landing etc.. this would be better. You could plug this into the socket direct. However I would want to install a spur next to chosen point and take the feed from this rated at 3/5 amp depending on manufacturer guidance. This will allow you to isolate the light should you need to. In all honesty there is so many ways to conduct this install not all are correct ways. Remember just because it works it doesn't mean it's right. Call a friendly local electrician and I'm sure he/she will provide a service you can trust and rely on.
