Gas Works

Can I have a gas boiler in an outbuilding supplied by the kitchen gas inlet?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

Hi, please bare with me on this as I have virtually zero understanding on these matters. 12 years ago my dad had an outbuilding erected in the rear of our garden. The outbuilding has a bathroom and separate boiler but it appears that the boiler draws gas from the gas inlet behind the cooker in the main house. Copper pipes run through the wall and externally along the side of the house. They have then been buried under concrete and resurface under the boiler in the outbuilding. This was all done without notifying the council and building control. I have three questions that I need help with. a) Is this a safe method to extract gas? b) If not, what work needs to be done to make it safe? c) Would it be possible to get retrospective planning permission or regularisation. The reason I ask is that we may be selling the house and I’d like everything to be declared honestly without causing problems to any potential buyers and of course would not like the value of the house to depreciate due to shoddy works. Thank you and I appreciate any help.

It all sounds as though it has been done properly. If you are still unsure, get a Gas Safe Registered engineer to inspect and test it.

It would all be legal as long as the boiler is obtaining the correct gas consumption ie at least 19mlb working pressure with all other appliances working fully at the same time by what information you are giving i in my opinion it would not be but until testing could not guess on the situation other than that as long as pipes protected and tested and boiler registered would be legal in outhouse space

Hi, it's a good idea to call a Gassafe registered company to inspect the appliance & installation. Try to find any paperwork or certificate that was originally given when the work was carried out, but it sounds like things weren't done as they should be. The engineer will give you good advice and let you know if work is required. Thanks Adrian

As long as the pipework has been protected it should be fine. there are certain depths to which the pipework must be buried too. if unsure, call out a gas safe registered engineer.
