Fit old doors to new garage
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.30 PM
Hi, we have recently bought a new house with a garage on the side (detached freestanding garage) We'd like to put a set of old patio doors on the side of the garage so we can access the garage from the garden without having to go out the front and open the big garage door on the drive way. With the garage being just a free standing building it is just single skin brick wall. Will this be ok to support a set of old patio doors removed from parents old house? Or do they need a thicker wall?

That would be fine provideing the brick or block work is solid make sure you fix top bottom and side’s We would not install bifolds into a single skin hope this helps

The doors will need a linttle for the head and cill for the bottom but check the hight of the doors to see if it fits normaly for garage conversion the doors are smaller

You will need to put a lintel in of some sort
As the doors won’t take the weight of the roof
Either a solid concrete one from wickes or a couple of pieces of 4 x 2 treated timber bolted togther

A single skin building is acceptable for patio sliding doors. Just use the correct lintel size for span of doors plus 300mm. That allows for 150mm into brickwork either side of door opening.
