structurally sound replacement of a glass panel above door?

I would like to replace my bathroom swing door with the sliding barn style kind. This will give me precious extra surface on the bathroom wall the door opens towards. There's, however, a glass panel fitted above the existing door that makes the installation impossible.
The top of the door frame doesn't sit directly above the door, with the panel mounted on top of it, rather there's just a thin piece of wood lining the bottom of the glass, and the door frame runs around both the door and the glass panel, all the way to the ceiling.
Once the glass has been taken out and the door frame lowered, how best to fill the empty space in such a way that an overhead rail can be attached to it and support the weight and movement of the new sliding door? (The wall thickness is about 3 inches.)
And if I decided to have a professional to do the job, should I be looking for a carpenter, builder, someone else?
Many thanks.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
1st you would take all surrounding timber off from wall and the door frame. Remove the glass panel safely.
The gap now above the door frame needs to be fill in by a timber frame. When installing the timber frame you can work out where the rail for the sliding door will go.
You would centre a horizontal timber between the timber frame fixed securely. This would give you support for the door rail.
You need to set your new stud wall above the door frame to allow for plaster board and skim. Once plasterboard and skim the wall will be flush.
Then fix the rail centre of the horizontal timber within the new wall. Fit the sliding door to the rail lock etc

I would have too see the doorway before making an accurate decision on whats the best way to carry out works.Without seeing I would probably look first of all to see if a sliding door would work in the space provided. If so I would remove glass panel and frame, reframe with suitable timbers as to have a good fixing for new sliding rail for new door.Plasterboard and plaster panel above door or clad with materials to match existing walls.
Jonathon Gay has correctly outlined the process.
You should be looking for a carpenter and a plasterer, or a carpenter who knows a good plasterer, or a carpentry-based building company.

Although with out viewing it does sounds very much like remove existing trimmings and frame replace with new proposed frame and door and make good where necessary .
