Cooker switch tripping sockets

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

When I turn my cooker walk switch on All my sockets trip . The cooker doesn’t even light up on the display . The RCD circuit trips on the board . If it’s a cooker fault wouldn’t the display light and then trip as I turned on .. say a ring or oven ?. I’m presuming it’s a faulty wire in the switch . I’d appreciate any advice please

the RCD would trip immediately if your cooker is faulty and you would not get any display shown, to confirm it first switch the cooker isolator off and if the RCD does not trip it is not the wiring from the board to the isolator then disconnect the cable at the cooker keeping the cores apart and not touching anything switch the isolator on if it does not trip it has to be the cooker that is faulty best option if you are not sure is to get a qualified electrician in who can test the cables safely.

This is good advice, although it is not advisable for anyone but a trained electrician to perform the test with the wire as explained.

To do even the basic tests for isolation prior to disconnection requires specific mains testing instruments. Your only initial test would be to switch off your consumer unit. Then switch off the cooker at the cooker point. Then switch off breaker for the cooker circuit in the consumer unit. Switch back on your consumer unit with all the previously on breakers in the on position. The RCD should not trip. Then switch on the cooker circuit at the consumer unit. IF this action trips the RCD then you either haves faulty circuit cable to the cooker switch OR a faulty cooker switch. IF it doesn’t trip, then switch on the cooker panel switch. If this then trips, SWITCH OFF the cooker breaker at the consumer unit and call a qualified electrician.

The fault could be with the cable on the load side of the cooker switch, or the cooker unit itself. To test the cable safety, an insulation test needs to be carried out by a qualified electrician.
