Leaves turning yellow- is tree unhappy in exposed position?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

Hi there I have recently planted a tree in an exposed area in the garden where it is exposed to the winds. When I got the tree, the leaves where all green, but now since planting I see that some have started turning yellow. I am wondering if the tree is unhappy there? The tree: liquidambar styraciflua 'worplesdon Have I done something wrong and will the tree be ok there? I dug a deep hold before planting, mixed in a lot of manure with the soil and put some root grow on there also. I have also used stake and tie to hold the tree in place. Perhaps I used too much fertiliser? Thanks for your help! Dave —— Note- I have been watering the tree regularly. I put 50% manure 50% soil into planting hole. Could this be the issue? —- Thank you to everyone that has posted responses. I have dug up the tree and removed a lot of the existing manure and replanted with soil and some compost. Will continue to water and see how things go.

Hi Dave, have you been watering it regularly? I’d advise at least 3-5 ltrs a day

Have you been watering the tree since it was planted? Make sure it gets plenty of water. Occasional rain is not enough. Hope that helps.

This could be you've compacted the soil too much and the roots cant get air, under watered- trees like lots of water over a spaced period. Soak the soil weekly and make it a heavy soak. Have you covered the roots with too much mulch? They need to breathe.

Too much organic fertiliser ! Dig the tree up and remove all of the manure. replant in your basic soil with no additives. Excessive manure will overload the soil with phosphorus. This will have the effective of blocking other important trace elements in the soil that your plant needs and is toxic to soil organisms that make essential associations with your tree roots such as mychorrhizae. Yes regular watering is essential on a daily basis.
