Changing fuse on immersion boiler

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

Sorry this is my first post as I have not been able to find an answer, most probably as its very basic. I have moved into a new flat which has an immersion heater. The night time immersion worked for 1 or 2 nights before simply stopping while the day time one seems to work. I have noticed the fuse trips for the water heater in the night time consumer box. To make sure it wasn't due to an overload, me and my wife one night unplugged every electrical item in the house and then found when we switched the night time immersion switch on it trips. I have told the landlord about this and have been told to change the fuse otherwise we would be liable for the call out charge. The problem is I am not sure where the fuse is. I have changed fuses in plugs and wall switches which have a fuse compartment next to it. Would the fuse be inside the night time immersion boiler switch as there is no fuse compartment next to it. Or would it be inside the thermostat where the element is. I will try add links to images if possible. I will try see what fuse Amp is inside and replace it with the same one. If that blows again I assume it is the element and will let the landlord know and hopefully she will replace it. Thanks for any help/suggestions. Some pics of the bottom element and the night time immersion switch (not sure where the fuse is) and the night time consumer box. https://ibb.co/bBkzGwd https://ibb.co/svJsgGw https://ibb.co/q1xpjN5 https://ibb.co/CtpnzJN P.S I just wanted to add. I have no direct contact with the landlord, only via the agency. The agency said the landlord said there was problems with the boiler with the previous tenants but they didn't realise we are in communication with the previous tenants. The previous tenants told us they sent out an engineer to replace both immersions when they had no hot water (maybe couple/few years ago). Is there anything that can be done about the lying as this is not the first time the agency has lied (but this time we have proof in the form of email). Or should I just accept that how some agency/landlords are and get them to just fix the boiler. Sorry for the long rant. Thanks again.

Firstly, I do a great deal of work for a letting agency. YOU ARE NOT responsible for the call out charge. It is your landlords duty of care to ensure that all equipment in the flat that is his, is in good working order. You have 2 elements in the water tank. The night time one is usually the bottom one, and the daytime one either in the top of the tank or halfway down. The fact that it keeps tripping on the night time one is a clear indication that it needs a new element. It has nothing to do with the fuse. The fuse is only a protective device to ensure that the power is disconnected under fault conditions, so as to prevent the risk of shock or fire. You should read through your tenancy agreement and contact the letting agents as to the nature of the problem.

Probably not a fused unit feeding it though. From trip switch via a Double Pole switch to immersion. More than likely the element has gone. This is a job for a qualified person to undertake what your landlord is thinking about asking you to fault find, and save him/her some money I do not know. I would strongly advise ringing your landlord to get someone over to fix it, which is what should have happened in the first place. Also, if you don’t really know what you are doing you shouldn’t be touching it either.

There should be no other fuse in the circuit except for at the consumer unit. With me not knowing if your consumer unit at the mains has fuses or circuit breakers then you just have to find the circuit marked up for the night time immersion. if that trips instantly then the heater element or the thermostat attached are faulty. you will need an electrician to check it then perhaps a plumber to change out the element.

It sounds like the immersions heater has gone faulty this is the element in your hot water tank. I suggest that you get this look at by an electrician.
