Boarded up Artex ceiling, old Fire Alarm is beeping!

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.29 PM

Hi there We had our bungalow's Artex ceiling safely contained and boarded up, we also had a full rewire. A week or so ago, my fire alarm kept beeping - I changed batteries etc but it was still beeping. I finally got up close and realised it wasn't this one beeping but the sound was coming from behind our boarded ceiling and was a fire alarm that had been left on the Artex ceiling! If it was just an old battery I would imagine the battery would have died by now after beeping for a good week or so which leads me to believe it's still wired to old electrics? Any advice on this? I'm not sure wether to just cut through and remove this old alarm or if it's more of an electrics issue and I should have someone come and look at my supposed rewire! Any advice greatly recieved.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Firstly as it is a bungalow I would go into the loft and check for voltage on the old wiring feeding this old bleeping smoke alarm. The cables should be under the insulation as it is a bungalow and should be visible if they are still there. If they are not I would try and gain access to the smoke alarm from the loft rather than cutting the new ceiling.

i would agree , try to trace the alarm and cable within the loft areas and isolate using wago click joints and a wago box

As you’ve mentioned that your property has been rewired and the ceilings lowered, it’s highly unlikely that the electrician would have left supplies connected to an old smoke alarm. It’s more likely that the beep sound you’re hearing is the smoke alarm telling you that the battery is low. If this is the case, the beep will occur every 30 seconds or so. To be honest, if this is just the battery, it can go in for months. Just to be on the safe side, I’d cut a square hole in your lovely new ceiling and have it professionally removed (being artex). The hole can then be made good easily using the section you cut out, some batton and then filled/painted. The electrician who carried out the rewire should be responsible for this as redundant parts are normally removed during a rewire.

Get the electrician who rewired your property as he should have made sure any old cables get and alarms were removed
