Rubber promenade tiles over fibreglass roof?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.50 PM

I have 2 questions please: 1. Can rubber promenade tiles be laid straight on top of a fibreglass roof? We currently have ceramic tiles on the roof as it is a patio area to access flats. But the tiles are old and need changing so we want to lift them up and lay new rubber tiles down as it will also be better soundproofing for the room under the roof. 2. If we decided to change the roof can an EPDM roof can be laid straight on top of a fibreglass (and then we put the rubber tiles on top of that)? Thank you very much in advance! ** Thank you both for your answers. We have decided to stick to the fibreglass roof and not get involved with EPDM. In response to BT Roofing Services; yes the roof was built with moderate foot traffic in mind as it is the main entrance and walkway to 2 flats. And in response to Fibretechs, the current ceramic tiles that were fitted were very poorly done so they are cracked and the grout coming loose etc. The roof itself is not leaking, but the tiles are broken and causing water logging so they need to come up. We have also been advised to use Acrypol over the fibreglass roof and then lay the new rubber tiles on top of that. Would you agree with the Acrypol? Thanks again

You can lay the tiles straight over yes, I’m assuming the fibreglass roof was built with moderate foot traffic in mind and whoever installed it used the heavier stronger matting? I imagine you can lay EDPM rubber straight over fibreglass as you can go straight over old asphalt roofs providing they are sound eg aren’t leaking and haven’t cracked and bubbled and the area is cleaned & dried properly before installing. Your best bet is to ring the local stocker of EDPM rubber and ask them as they are the ones guaranteeing the material and would know best practice. But in my option providing you throughly clean & dry the fibreglass and it isn’t cracked and leaking it should be fine you might have to use the stronger contact adhesive glue everywhere instead of just the edges and up stands maybe? My advice would be to overlay the existing fibreglass system with a new system that allows foot traffic and then install an anti slip finish using quartz granules and a clear sealer

I would be dubious of the last answer. What you need to consider is if you take up the ceramic tiles you will have adehisive stuck to the fibreglass. With all the best intentions in the world this will be difficult to remove to a flat surface. EPDM even with a strong contact adhesive on an uneven surface will cause many air voids which is not ideal. If the roof is not leaking then simply lay your promenade tiles over the existing....
