New GRP roof looks very rough

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.49 PM

We have just had a new GRP flat roof installed and the roofer decided to do this on a day where rain was forecast. He assured me that it did not rain when he applied the resin but the roof has now dried and looks very blotchy. Some areas are nice and smooth and others are really rough with a distinct colour difference. Theres also a lot of pin prick holes that have appeared and a few snags. He came highly recommended by the local residents but i feel like he's rushed our job a bit. What could have caused the difference in texture and colour? And should I ask him to revisit to look? Thanks in advance

The pin pricks are were either moisture has getting in ie rain or where not enuf liquid has been applied, I would ask him to call back for a look

Pin prick holes is we’re not enough topcoat or resin was applied, if moisture got in you won’t be able to tell now the top layer is on now. The first layer if moisture is present the resin won’t set clear but extremely cloudy/white and takes a good day to go hard, but if you get up there you might be able to feel moisture trapped between the fibreglass and the OSB deck this is called delamination but if you do this and there is moisture trapped in with you standing on it you risk it cracking so be careful. Difference in colour this is a new one I’ve not heard this issue before but I can only assume it something to do with moisture, call him back and ask him to sand it down and clean it with acetone and go over it again with top coat. If it cracks in the future repairs are fairly straight forward and easy as long as they are dealt with quickly and you don’t let the deck get saturated. If some areas are really rough that is a sign he didn’t sand down the first layer properly or at all, again I’m not sure what you mean by blotchy. Definitely call him back, hope everything goes well good luck. Regards Frankie BT Roofing Services

Usually the difference in colour is due to a separate application. You will only ever obtain a complete coat with the same colour by applying it to the entire roof. Patching it up will literally look how it sounds. These pin holes will definitely cause damage over time as they seep into the wood slowly over time. A finished job will not have this. I hope this helps.

Sounds like the top coat/gel coat wasn’t applied evenly and the snags could have been sanded off before the top coat. GRP is a hard product to use in England as our weather is so unpredictable. If it had rained when when the chemical reaction would have been contaminated and over time will fail. Ask the roofer to give it a light sand to remove all snags and clean with acetone and reapply top coat. Unfortunately now top coat is on you won’t tell if it got wet during applying. I hope this helps Daniel Ellis Roofing
