How to paint over wood sap on exterior windows

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.49 PM

Hello We need to paint all our exterior wood windows but as these have not been painted for a while a sticky wood sap is coming through in lots of places. I assume this is because the wood knots were not treated when the windows were installed 20 years ago. We plan to use dulux weather shield satin paint but as this is water based I don’t think it will stop the wood sap leaking through again, is there anything I can put on the wood sap to stop this from happening? Many thanks

To be honest, there isn't really a product that will stop it for good. Environmental conditions on outside wood are going to draw the sap out. You can try 'burning' the knots - basically use a heat gun (carefully near the glass) to draw the sap out so you can wipe it off. Zinsser BIN will stop stains from knots but it won't stop sap. it's also not recommended for outside use.

heat gun very gently raise the heat and wipe as you go with spirits ,let the wood dry then treat with farrow and ball exterior knotting, stain to colour you want.
