1:5 mix of cement and sand

I have been preparing mortar with a 1:5 ratio, using a tub to measure out the cement and sand, but have run out of sand by a significant amount. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

Sand doesn't go far when laying a mortar base for a slabbed patio. For example a 5 meter by 5 meter patio area (25 square meters) with a compo base of 2 inches will take at least 2 tons of sand.

The should of bee 1:3 or 1:4 at the most

1.First of all what is the mortar mix going to be used for,
2.Different sands for different application
3.You can create a stronger mix if required but you need to tell us what you are actually doing,
