Bricklaying & Repointing

Gap between new porch wall mortar and house

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi, I'm having a new porch built, and they've laid the brickwork for the porch, using a wall starter to connect to the house. This was done 3-4 weeks ago. I've looked at the outside recently, and there's about 1cm gap now, between the two walls. All the way where the existing house and new porch wall are joined. (About 2.5-3 Meters high) Most of the gap is on the mortar connecting to the house (so mortar is still connected to the porch bricks). Just a few courses of bricks it;s the other way around. Is this normal? Does it need to be simply filled in with new mortar? You can see through the gaps completely at a lot of the points in the wall (inside has only just been sand/cement plastered - so you could see the light coming in) or is there a bigger problem and something wasn't done correctly? The other side, there is maybe a 3/4 meter 'wall' (it's half glazed that side), and they didn't use a wall starter. They only did sand/cement a few days ago on the inside, and you can already see a crack coming down where the join is, on the sand/cement layer too. Thanks, EDIT: Thanks for the answers. After having gone back to them, they are going to re-do the connection to the wall, and 'tooth' it in. I hope this will suffice and it will be OK for the future? I know this is now not a top notch job, but I'm not sure what else to do. Already have paid 75% of the price (in stages).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It's sounds if starter bar or connector has been fitted incorrectly...and 10mm+ gap is not good...and you shouldn't have to fill anything with cement after the build...sometimes builders hammer fixing screws in..instead of winding them in ...means they will pull straight back out...Sorry...by toothing it your doing the best..goodluck

1. Not pointed properly. 2. Sounds like perps are too big. 3. Sounds like insufficient wall ties. 4. Starter bar should have been used on both sides. 5. Should not have to fill gaps with mortar and should not be able to see through the wall. 6. Possibly used hammer fixings which have just come away.

If you have a 10mm gap between them 3/4 weeks after they have built the porch something is seriously wrong

Sounds like the concrete foundation is not deep in the dig and/or the concrete is not thick enough.
