Fencing

Building fence with existing fence in place

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

I am looking to build a 6ft fence in garden which already have a 3-4ft fence (posts are in good condition and been concreted into the grass well. Am I able to attach higher posts to the existing and build fence off that? Or would I need to dog out old posts and digger deeper holes and use new posts?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You won't be able to use existing posts and larger panels, the best option is to dig out and replace, a 6 ft fence requires 8 ft posts

Hi there if your havin new fence installed and it’s going to be a higher fence you’ll need to use 8ft fence post with at least 450 mm in the ground so you’ll have to start from scratch better job in the long run you will probably need to dig out old post if the fence your installing is the same width your new Posts will end up in the same position as old ones or unless you’ve got room to start just in front of the old fence just over a Foot or so then you might avoid digging out old posts Hope this helps Scott

You can use post extenders for the cost effective answer. Ideally you should take out the old posts and fit larger posts. I normally fit 600mm in the ground for a fence panel any greater than 7ft high.

Honestly for the money you would be saving on existing posts (which wouldn’t be a lot presuming it would be an average 20-30m garden run) wouldn’t outweigh the cost of having to do it all again should the current posts fail. Is this a panel fence or rail and board?

You won’t be able to use existing posts as panels will be to big best to remove original posts and install new I recommend fitting anti rot wraps to the posts to prolong life and as always with all fencing use pressure treated wood
