Extension Lead in loft safety - fire safety advice.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

The previous owners have placed regular 4 way extension lead in the loft to supply power to the TV aerial. However the extension lead has been left sitting directly on top of the insulation. The extension lead sockets are not covered by the insulation just sitting on top of it. Only one of the sockets of the extension cable is being used. Three are unused. The extension lead cable runs down the wall and is plugged into a socket on the first floor which can be switched off . I'm wondering if this is safe and whether dust e.g from fiberglass over time could get into the extension lead sockets and become a fire risk.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you are concerned about ‘ fire safety’ strongly urge you get a fixed socket outlet in the loft and do away with the lead altogether.

It's not likely to become a fire hazard, the unused sockets could fill with dust. To avoid this use child saftey blanks. Having extention cables running down walls is not safe, it would be better to get it installed correctly.

As suggested by Horace PLEASE DO NOT USE CHILD SAFETY BLANKS, these have NO CE mark and can actually cause fires after NICEIC regualtion body informed Mothercare about these blanks they removed them from sale.
