Tiling

Cement Boarding

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

I am retiling my bathroom floor (traditional wooden floorboards). 2 Questions please: 1. When it comes to laying cement board am I ok with the 4mm thickness as I want to avoid having a step at the doorway threshold. Or should I go for the 6mm thickness to be sure. 2. The bath is fixed directly onto the floor boards. Should I remove the bath and lay cement board under the bath? Or is this not necessary (its been like this for years).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, I always use 6mm hardy backer board on floors with the recommended hardy screws. I’ve never had any issues with this product and highly recommend it. It’s not really necessary to remove the bath. Sail the hardy board in and around the bath legs but only around 100mm beyond where your bath panel will reside. You’ll get the best finish by tiling slightly under your bath panel and having the panel sit on top of the tiles with a near silicone seal finish. Hope this helps

6mm board would be ideal, to stop more movement for tiles, No need to remove bath as you don’t need to , unless your tiling whole room

Hi There! I recommend that you use 6MM hardi backer cement board. The process should be make sure all floorboards are solid and secure with less movement as possible then prime the floorboards with a bond primer SBR to allow the adhesive to stick correctly The process should be a thin layer of adhesive underneath each board then lay each board down and screw all corners and then onto the circle marks that are already on the boards in a grid formation (with Hardi screws) and (ONLY GO FOR THE RIGHT THICKNESS OF SCREWS!!!!) enough for to go into the floorboard only, so you are glueing and screwing the board on top of the floorboards in preparation for floor tiling Allow the board to tuck under the bath a few inches where possible and you can go around the bath legs/feet/support legs if need be Hardi boards and screws are available at Topps tiles/CTD/Screwfix/ or online Hope all this info helps

Yes I agree with all the answers that have been posted and there is no issue with standing at the doorway but I would make sure that they are screwed down every 100mm
