Light pull switch change to light fitting

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

Maybe a stupid question but I have a light pull in my bedroom I don't need and want to put a hanging light there. Can I use the same wiring?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I believe the pull cord operates the switch live. If you don't need the pull cord you can lose it but you will then need to chase a cable from the supply above your light to a switch on the wall which will then become you on off switch.

This pull cord in bedrooms is usually an additional switch to the one by the door usually over where the bed is. If this is the case you can remove it and put connections in a non maintenance junction box within the ceiling. If you want to change this to a light fitting you will probably require more cabling At this point ie a Neutral and possibly new switch cabling to a new switch. Would Recommend you ask a competent electrician to survey.

Possibly. This depends on how the original pull switch and light have been wired. If pull switch has been wired as a ‘2 way’ switch in parallel to another existing one (most likely located by the door), then it may be doable without adding additional wiring. Some rearrangement of connections in the ceiling light rose would need to be done too. This however should be assessed by professional.

In a word, no. You could use the location for a light however it would need an electrician to rewire.
