Groundwork & Foundations

Garage removal, concrete slab, wall build

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

Hi there. Might be a bit long this one but I’m really hoping I can get some advice on what jobs are involved here and where, if possible, I can keep costs down and do myself. I’ve got a prefab concrete garage (5x3) in my sloped, narrow, Victorian terrace back garden that I’m wanting removed. Asbestos roof. Can take down the garage myself (roof aside) and just pay disposal costs. Will then need a 2m brick wall built at the back of the garden as the garage door was the boundary. I’m then left with a large flat piece of concrete that the garage is currently sat on that takes up 3/4 of the garden with concrete paving tiles next to garage, on an incline, running from the house to the back gate. I’m in two minds about keeping the concrete slab, given that it’s level (which helps in such a small garden) but looks worn and needs covering. Alternatively could rip up the paving tiles at the side of the concrete base and put in planters. Trying to get an idea whether it’s worth sourcing someone to do EVERYTHING here, or if it’s actually worth getting stuck in myself taking down the garage, digging up paving tiles, etc. Only asking as prices I’m getting are off Facebook so far and can’t trust some of them as far as I could throw them, not reputable firms or names or qualifies. Hard to post the whole job on here as it involves so many things eg asbestos (originally put on as demolition but got one reply). Any advice, at all, will be appreciated. jobs to avoid, easy jobs etc.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi there this is not a response regarding the actual work but more on how to best go about getting a quote and a better idea of what your looking for . It sounds to me that this is a job that requires 1 decent groundworks team and possibly someone to remove the astbestos . From reading your question its clear u want to do some of the work yourself to keep the costs down totally understandable but when you try to advertise a job it can be hard for a company to establish whats needing done and it can put them off quoting. Maybe try advertising the job as a whole, shortlist a few companys you like and when you have a site meeting to discuss the job say then is there any work i can do myself to keep the cost down . this way it makes the whole process a little less complicated . I hope this helps

Hi you could take the garage down yourself grind the fixings of that fix the roof on so the sheets stay whole and don’t break away take the tiles up yourself and organise for a registered waste management company to collect them source a bricklayer to build the wall and depending on what you want to do on the garage slab source a tradesman for that. This way you will keep the cost down

I think if you are prepared to do the work yourself I think it would be worth just advertising the wall at the back are you can take the roof off without damaging the asbestos in full sheets using the protective clothing and mask and gloves taking down the prefab garage and in relation to the garage floor if you’re planning on keeping it you could put a nice slab or something on top and have another packet where are you I think it comes down to money saving You could put the foundations for the wall as well I have a quotation from a local builder just to do the brickwork if you are prepared to do Most of the labour yourself then this would be very cost-effective on your behalf If you do not have the time it would be worth shortlisting a contractors and putting everything as a As a job lot removing the garage installing the foundation for the wall and building the new wall hope this helps
