Is it ok to have piers on the outside of a single skin building instead of inside?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

When building a concrete block shed. 3600mm x 3600mm. with the blocks at the the height of 2250mm above dpc. Can i place the piers on the outside of the building rather then the inside to create more space. Also is it ok to use wall ties to tie the blocks to the wall after or should i tie the blocks into each other. Thanks. you lot are great help!

Hi. Okay,so any single built walls that are over 1 metre in height will need supporting pillars at equal point in length or there abouts.. With your particular build you have a 4 corners which will support the corners. Building piers to support this can be done on the outside to create space as long as they are tied in as you mentioned. The strongest system is to interlock the blocks instead of wall ties. So next to the single skin block, lay to flat making sure the blocks are square and will look plumb at each side. The build system will obviously be repeated until you reach the desired height. Obviously the appearance will be obvious to the eye but you will be safe in the knowledge that its supporting the build properly. I recommend you will the jounts in the corners at each course, this will aid the pointing when complete instead of filling later as this creates voids. Happy building. The piers at each corner and one in the middle of each length are better on the inside tied in to the blockwork with a block on flat every few courses .this also makes the outside easier to render.

It would be possible to build the piers on the out side provided you incorporate in the line of the building in other wards when build the corner first course 2 blocks flat second course 2 blocks upright witch would tie piers in and you only have 100mm showing on out side of your building without looking to mutch out of place repeat at equal points of the build

Hello yes agree with interlocking of the pillars ,but if you prefer to have the pillars on the outside then personally I would suggest at this point to build the garage double skin Blockwork anyway , as by the time you have the pillars showing on the outside you might as well just make the rest of the single skin that's left double skin
