Plastering before or after installing electric boxes
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM
Got electrician coming down and want all chase and electric box installed ready for first fix. My question is because all plaster is completely gone and I got brick exposed. How do I install the box? Do I have to install it flush with brick or leave it exposed 10mm ready for the plaster to join and have finish flat surface?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It depends how much plaster/render etc is being applied? I ( if I don’t know how much) usually do them flush with the brickwork.

Hi
The best thing would be to chase the boxes flush with the wall.
When the plasterer covers the wall, I would ask him to run around the insides of your back boxes with a pencil while the plaster is wet. This saves having to cut the plaster out of you box once it’s dry.

Ask the plasterer you are going to use. Depends on what and how he’s going to do it, some use bonding coat or render but most dot and dab If it’s full wall. but if you are just chopping out set them level with the front of existing Plaster

Leave the boxes! That's the electricians job, removing the old cables, fitting boxes and new cable is all part of the first fix process. if he's given you a quote then all the materials and labour inc Fitting the back boxes will be included.

I would surface mount the boxes , plasterer will take care of the rest , thickness(depth) of back box should be considered to whether he is wet plastering or dry lining, you dont want a protruding back box ,
