Strong smell travelling around the house from ground floor to upstairs.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.32 PM

A very strong smell seems to be travelling around my house. It started in the front part of our ground floor living room, under the floorboards, yesterday morning. We assumed it was a dead rat (we can smell a rotten iron type smell). But, the stench is moving around the house. By the evening it was gone from the front part of the ground floor living room to the back of the living room. We thought it was strange, how can the smell be moving if it's a rotting carcass. But it has got stranger, as this morning it has moved to our upstairs ensuite which is directly above the living room, the smell is disappearing from the living room and is now more concentrated in the ensuite. Any ideas? Because we are at a loss as to what it could be hence can't work out the right experts to ask for help. Thanks in advance.

It's possible that there is a fracture in the sewer pipes running under the house or from ware it Leeds out in the garden

you could also just check to see if your waste lines all have traps, as sewage smells can travel along the waste pipes and the smell will protrude from your sinks.

I kind of want to agree with the previous answers but you don't mention any fluid leakage or damp spots on ceilings or walls! have you thought to investigate a rodent problem? I say this as rodents do follow the convenient routs we create for plumbing and electrical services, etc. good luck and I hope post the answer to this on here. regards.
