Gravel over sharp sand

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

I already have a sharp sand base. Can I gravel over this for parking or would there be movement in the sand? Its around 4-6 inch deep in parts. New house and previous owners started but didn't finish what they were doing

No To spread gravel over a sand base would just result in a driveway made of loose ballast.

No is the answer The gravel will embed down into the sand making you car sink causing ruts If you are looking to have a gravel drive I would recommend that you remove the sand and put in a type one base compacted Then on top of this use a gravel grid possibly nidagravel or similar and spread the stone in and over the grids The grids stop the gravel moving and any dips forming

Hi there I definitely wouldn't gravel over sharp sand, aleast that thick. I would remove as much as possible and compact it preferably with a machine but check if it has an m.o.t or crushed concrete sub base first. Add a weed membrane then gravel. Good luck

I’m afraid that would not be sufficient, what you would need to do is dig the area out at 250mm the put in a type 1 limestone sub base at a depth of 200mm compact it with a wacker plate, then spread the shingle over at 50 depending on the size of the shingle. 20mm shingle=50mm 10mm shingle=40mm 6mm shingle=30mm
