Fixing bouncy floor
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.30 PM
Hi there, I am looking at fixing a bouncy 1st floor, the joists are spaced at 40cm apart but when walking across the wooden planks it’s a bit bouncy. I am thinking that 22-25mm plywood might be a good solution, but there might be other opinions.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, If you have already exposed the joists it would be a good idea to add some more noggins with 100mm screws....the more you add the less it bounce.
Add 22mm chipboard glued and screwed and the floor should be solid.
Kind Regards

Depending on size of room there probably are no joist bracing to strengthen complete floor average size rooms have timbers cut and fixed in-between every joist to hold them all together to strengthen floor bigger the room the more rows of these timbers you put in,I personally would not plywood over floor as this is not rectifying the problem in my opinion

More noggins or dwangs are fine and will definitely help however if the joist sizes are under designed for the span then it really needs a better solution than adding additional weight to the floor. You could and I would advise contact a structural engineer who would be better to provide a definitive solution to your issue.

If the there is defection in the floor ply will not solve the problem you need to check the size of the room make sure the joist are heavy enough for the span is not they will need to be double up and bolted together add more bridging then relay the floor. Other problems could be rot which will be reviled when the joist are exposed
