How to unscrew tap handle

I want to unscrew the handle off my kitchen tap but it’s completely stuck. I’ve tried to wriggle it back and forth to loosen it but it wont give. The top is like an “X”. Any ideas please?

A photo would help if it is what I am thinking it is some older taps have a grub screw in them so you will need to release that first but a photo would help

If by an x you mean the tap handle is a cross that turns then there is normally a cap in the centre to prize of (or sometimes unscrew by hand), under that you will find a screw, undo the screw and the tap handle should lift off, sometimes needing a gentle tap.
