Cutting of mantle piece shelf

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hello, I have a slate fireplace mantle piece which is slightly out of proportion for the chimney breast. The mantle top is a separate piece of slate to the rest of the surround and is too wide for the chimney breast- making the mantle top stick out into each alcove by 5 inches or so. I am looking for advice and suggestions of who to contact to help me cut the mantle width down to fit the chimney, the edges will still be visible so I wanted it to be cut to a good finish and figured I wouldn't get that with an angle grinder. Any suggestions? water cutting? any other ways? thank you

Cut with angle grinder and leave around 2mm on. Finish with a buff cup and flappy pad

Take it to a local granite and marble workshop as the will have the proper tools and knowledge to cut and polish the edge it is not a job that A diy enthusiast should do

When you cut slate it will be lighter in colour that the face surface so it will have to be cut and honed or polished through different grades of pads on a grinder to match the existing colour
