Bathroom Fitting

Extra Bathroom fitting charges despite no change to scope of project

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi, I have a very quick question. My builder is attempting to throw in extra charges for building out my bathroom suite. When we originally spoke, it was agreed he would install a completely new suite for us. He is now coming back and adding in additional costs for Installing the side bath panel, putting the basin and toilets in, despite it clearly being labelled in our itemised quote. His reasoning is that it has taken him longer than planned to install it as it was somewhat complicated. He is also charging to use Silicone on the corners of the bath, basin and so on. Is he right to do this? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It is all down to the details of the Quote or Estimate. These are two important words. What does it say on what he gave you. If it was a quote, he should not be carrying for anything extra unless fully agreed with you. An estimate is just that, the final cost may be higher if extras are found during the works. read what was given to you carefully. if you feel he is trying to charge for what is the quote/estimate discuss with him. showing him where he said it is included. Any bathroom fitter should be aware of how long things should take. UNLESS you changed what is required during the works. this then throws the quote/estimate out the window. changes should have been discussed with any addition costs incurred .

Hi. I would suggest that the builder has no contractual right to ask for the extra amount especially if they were included in the original quote.

No he is not right to charge extras for fitting your bathroom. If he has priced the job wrong that’s his fault & he should honour the original contract.

No he shouldn't be doing this. If you price to fit a bathroom the job should be from start to finish including bath panel accessories etc.

Hi There He might add extra costs for fitting basin and toilet if is out off standard fitting or suit. If bath panel wasn't mention to be fit at the first place. However all of that should be disscussed before the job was even started. Definitely he shouldn't put any extra costs for doing silicon as it supposed to be included in hisoriginal estimate. Personally i price a job from start to finish u less the customer adds any extras on the price i give stands if it takes me longer than quoted thats my problem not the customers and charging extra for fitting toilet /basin / silicone thats just wrong he gave you a price thats what it should be . The only extras during a job should be discussed before the job starts ie extra fittings not priced for under floors but really that shouldnt affect the customers final bill

That is unacceptable. Sometimes there is changes during the works but have to be agreed with the customer before carry on the changes. But if there was no change to the project and it is specified on the quotation there is no way of extra charges. If it is taking longer then expected and it is nothing to do with you. It is hard to specify exact completion day anyway because you don't know what you find under the floor or wall. Sometimes projects take longer sometimes quicker. Please note that if you added anything during the project it is should be agreed with the builder and will affect the final bill. But the thinks like silicon and bathroom panel never been extras!!!

The answer to your question is NO. He is not right to do this. If he has given you a quote for the installation of a bathroom suite and nothing has changed since the quote then he is very wrong. The fact it was complicated is through no fault of yours and he should have investigated further before issuing a quote. If there was a hidden issue that there is no way he could identify when doing a survey to quote. Then there may be room for compromise (for example the floor boards under the bath are rotted and require replacing) but other than this or a similar circumstance he should not be adding extra charges to an already agreed quote. I hope this helps and if you require any further assistance please dont hesitate to contact me. Regards Billy Prior

Bathroom renovation is not complicated work for experienced fitter. The price should include second fix plumbing including the silicone. Extra charges might apply when customer adding extra work or we come across additional unexpected work like rotten floor or walls discovered after removing old tiles, and can’t be seen at the day of estimating the job.

This isn’t right. When quoting a job taking everything into consideration should be at the forefront of your mind, so as to get the most accurate quote to suit both parties. Sometimes there will be things that take a little longer than expected but extra charges should never be added. The only way this will change is if the scope of work changes by the customer. Which then a fair price would be added to the quote to accommodate additional labour and material costs.

If he has stated the full cost to fit your bathroom suite, Tile, and all the other trades to be done and remove rubbish from site that has priced you for a complete bathroom refurbishment, if you have changed items around or you have had different items than originally quoted to fitted Yes he could be in his right to ask But silicon ,the bath panel all that is part of the fit anyhow you don’t just fit your bath and then leave a big gaping gap where the bath panel should be, so it all depends on how it was agreed on the price so forth, Some so-called fitters will deliberately go cheap to get work and then put the extras on and then end up at the same costings with the other prices that you had some do that but you should be given a quote and that is for everything and then through the job you should be told if there is extras

If a price is agreed at the start to put in a bathroom suite. Then that’s the price.

As quoted from the start every fitter including myself always allows for complications on a job that is wrong on every level if he’s under priced the job you just take it on the chin Well at least that’s what I would do 👍🏾

Outrageous, if he has provided a quote for the whole installation and not discussed any variance / issues arising then he has absolutely no right to make additional charges as described.
