Floor screed - primer?
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.56 PM
We have a new floor screed for a restaurant. Looking for advice if primer is still required before installing a bamboo flooring. So far we have received conflicting advice; from 2 coatings to none. Any expert advice here would be much appreciated. Many thanks

Please don't take any advice from someone who has not seen the floor. Every installation can be different, especially when it comes to new screed floors. The floor must be inspected by the installer first, assessed to see if it's dry and to find out what type of screed was laid. That is essential. If he knows what type of concrete it is and if it's dry then he should have the answers to how to approach laying the floor. Good luck.

So, the question being asked is do you need a primer, prior to laying a bamboo laminate floor?
The answer is simply NO you do not.
A primer is used on the bare concrete floor, prior to the floor recieving a self leveling compound, it helps reduce the dust and provides a tacky surface for the leveling compound to adhere to. A bamboo laminate floor, is laid on an underlayment, to allow for expansion and contraction. So primer should not even come into it, as you are applying the finished covering.

It really depends on whether you are laying a floating floor or glueing it down. If floating then it's just a question of the screed drying out enough to be less than 5%. If glueing, it depends on the type of screed. Some need an epoxy resin with some sand sprinkled in it, others can be glued straight to. Obviously, the 5% rule still applies.
