Plumbing

My water pump comes on about every 30 seconds without me turning on a tap.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.53 PM

All the plumbing runs behind the two bedroom walls so can be heard when it kicks in. The water tank at the far end feeds the grundfos pump which in turn feeds the taps & toilet cisterns when called. I have checked all overflows they seem to be ok. The house only 4 years old. I think the pressure vessel next to the hot water tank is fitted incorrectly (horizontal) & the diaphragm maybe broken as it will not take any air and gives a reading of 0. Are the two connected?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

the pressure vessel should be set at 1 - 1.5 bar, pump up with a bycycle pump connect to the schrieder valve on the top, if it doesnt hold check the valve for leaks. you might have a small leak on the pipework that is causing the pressure to drop and call the pump on.

The expansion vessel will state the required air pressure on the name plate, if you can not admit air into the vessel, disconnect the vessel and then try. If the diaphram is broke the air will simply come out the bottom connection. The pump may be running due to a possible leak but I am confused as to why you have an unvented hot water cylinder and tank fed pump for cold water to toilets and basin's. Basin's should be fed from mains water due to the complications with drinking tank water etc...
