Rendering over an old brick wall
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.56 PM
Hi my partner has rendered over an old brick wall in our garden. He used sand and cement but it seems to be cracking. And when you knock around the wall you can hear its coming away from the it. He's not sure if this is because he's used too much cement with the mix. Any advice would be appreciated

When u render the wall you need to score the wall first as the bricks aren't rough enough and paint sbr and cement on the wall first

When you render a wall on brick old or new, pva then wall first, then use plastering sand( leighton buzzard) 10 to 1 and cement Smooth down, level off, scratch it with lines going cross ways, once this complete,
Next day clean any snots off pva the area and finish with a smooth coat of sand and cement render make sure it’s flat, smooth off with sponge which circler actions with your hand

D.J.D. & Sons are correct.
The reason your partners render is "blowing", (coming away from the wall) is most probably because he hasn't sealed the bricks with "P.V.A.,(Polyvinyl alcohol).
The purpose of applying this solution is to bind and seal the existing surface, allowing for excellent adhesion (it'll stick like ?)
I hope this helps
Cordially

Before rendering in sand and cement you need to prime the wall with SBR and then slash coat the wall with a 1 sand 1 cement mix.
