How can I close off the fireplace as unwanted to create more space
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.56 PM
Hi, we are in the process of buying a newbuild (2015) which comes with a signature inglenook fireplace. There is no flue running throughout the property. The vendors just kept a small portable electric fire which theyre taking, as we don’t really want it. We would like to know how and if we can instead close it off, what would need doing and if we can just have a normal wall instead for space?i have a photo of it but this won’t allow me to upload but can email to anyone who can advise appropriately? Thanks.

The main question you have to answer is whether the fireplace, presumably on the ground floor, is supporting anything on floors above. Is it structural or just decorative?
If there is nothing above the fireplace then you can probably remove it. If there is a chimney running through upper floors you need to consult a builder / engineer

I would get a builder out or a structural engineer to check , like what was said if it’s decorative then it’s no problem to take out but if it’s going through the ceiling then it will need to be supported or taken down from the top
