How to connect Flex to double socket

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.10 PM

I want to run a spur from an internal double socket to an RCD weatherproof socket on the other side of wall outside. There would be about 30cm of tough flex cable secured to the wall from the weatherproof socket to where it goes into the house. It will be about 50cm above the ground Can I wire the flex straight into the back of the existing socket or do I need to run normal T&E into a junction box before connecting to flex?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. You'll have to take the 2.5mm² T/E cable from the back of the existing socket straight into the back of a IP65 junction box on the wall outside and then from there run another length of 2.5 mm² T/E in plastic conduit(or SWA cable properly glanced at both ends) to the bottom of your weatherproof RCD socket. Or appoint an qualified electrician to do the job. Hope that will solve it.

You are using the wrong type of cable, Flex or twin and earth. It needs to be armoured cable.

Like all things, possibly. Is the socket you will be connecting to on a ring protected by 32 amp mcb if not then you might be adding a spur into a spur which is ok if the circuit is protected by either a 16 or 20 amp mcb. Also it’s not good practice to combine a Solid Conductor and a Stranded one in the same connection. Also the flex needs to be minimum 2.5mm. You could use 2.5 twin and earth and enclose it in some pvc conduit.
