Vented central heating
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.10 PM
I’m looking to drain my vented (tank in loft) central heating system and remove all radiators for a few weeks / months. Will my hot water stop working and if so how can I still have hot water. Can I cap off where the valves are and refill the system or will this not allow a full cycle of the water? Or do I have to link where the valves are with pipe? Immersion heater isn’t reliable How can I refill the system if all the radiators are capped off and no bleed valves?

if you have a vented cylinder, cap off all rad valves, especially trv,s,refill system and run as normal,if you have an immersion heater element in the cylinder you can use that and leave heating drained,if unvented cylinder you can do the same.bleed through valves just open slightly till water comes out.

As the heating is effectively the primary side of the heating, along with the annular inside the hot water cylinder, it would be foolish and dangerous to empty the system and then run it. Shut the radiator valves, drain the radiators and remove them, but leave pipework and 'system' full. You can then keep use of the boiler and hot water, relying on thermostat on boiler or cylinder to shut boiler down when temp. reached.

You will have to refill all the pipes and make sure any air is out but there is no reason why you cannot run the hot water circuit without radiators on, just make sure the heating controls are off

U should drain the system completely remove the rads changing any valves that might let by in anyway once that is done make sure all the valves, trvs are closed refill the cilinder bleed the valves then everything should work as normal and when u are ready to refit the rads the system will be ready just bleed rads out
