Chimney breast - opening it up / brick slips?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.10 PM

Hi all, Currently weighing up options when it comes to the fireplace - we want the opening made larger, so I took it upon myself to knock away some plaster to see what’s underneath (there’s 100% a chimney underneath, but doesn’t seem to be any wider than it currently is), but don’t want to cause any damage. Original idea was to open up the opening (double the size, or bigger), then plaster over any issues, and then brick-slip the Chimney breast (still an option?) but, based on above - anything anyone else would do? We don’t want a working fire - so wouldn’t be looking at that as an option... Thanks!

the chimney breast has 2 main pillars one to each side which should be 9 inch thick brick work and these should not be reduced as they carry the weight of the breast. the opening should only be as wide as the internal walls and the height can be up to the existing arch or lintel or higher if required
