Laying plywood subfloor on a chipboard floor

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.40 PM

I am trying to install a new vinyl sheet floor in my bathroom. I'm in a flat where the floors are chipboard. Previously, the bathroom floor has been ceramic tiles laid directly onto the chipboard. These have cracked over time (probably due to small movement in the floor). I would like to replace these with a vinyl floor. I understand that I should take up the ceramic tiles, screw/staple a 6mm plywood 'subfloor' over the chipboard and then lay the vinyl on top of this. This is what happened in my kitchen (done by Carpetright) and I've had no problems. The only difference is that when I took up the kitchen tiles, most of the adhesive came up with the tiles leaving a smooth chipboard floor ready for plywood. However, in the bathroom, the tiles are coming up but leaving much of the tile adhesive behind, making the chipboard floor very bumpy with bits of old grout and adhesive all over. Can I sand these bits off with an electric sander or is there some other way of getting them up? Or can I just put the plywood over the lumps and bumps and screw/staple through the old adhesive? Many Thanks Darren

Hi Darren, I come across this problem quite often and the best remedy i know is to use a wallpaper steamer on the remaining adhesive. This will soften it up and make it easy to remove with a scraper, Good luck.

Both sub and mw are correct. You cant leave the bumps on :) You are going to need a proper bladed scraper though, not a decorators thing. They are about £7 from toolstation/screwfix.You can get a steamer for £30 in from the same places. Bit of hard work but well worth it and hardly any expense.
