Attic Conversion when you have a Single Roof Truss (Fink) for 1950s House
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.09 PM
Hi, My house is 1950s/60s typical semi-detached council house. Question I have is the attic is largely a vacant empty space except for one roof truss (fink style) in the middle. It's metal, and really really thin. Is it going to be significantly load bearing? Can you just remove these to make use of the attic space?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

hi
its not advisable to remove this as its there to stop the roof from spreading the only way is to fit joist hangers to the eaves by the wall plate and fit reinforced joist straps at ridge level then it would be ok to remove

You will need to contact a structural engineer, a structural engineer will give you the exact calculations apon which are supporting/load bearing steels and timbers. Usually they’d request doubling timbers in the roof space including the joists

This will be load bearing and you should definitely contact a structural engineer to get the correct calculations they will specify the correct materials to do the job then you know you can’t go wrong

You need a structural engineer to inspect the loft void to check the load bearing on the roof elevation.
