Cornicing: repair or replace
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.09 PM
Hello, I live in a victorian terrace house. There is original (I think) cornicing in the living room. It is in very bad shape with cracks everywhere (marching up with plaster cracks in the ceiling) and even pieces missing caused my the underlying plaster being detached from the ceiling above. The room is 3.5 x 3.7m with bay window. What are my options? Is there any realistic way of repairing given the damage is so extensive? Or is this best to be removed, replastered fully and replaced.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello the cracks can be repaired and any missing enrichment on the cornice can be resolved by taking down an original piece of enrichment making a mould and cast out as many new pieces as needed and put back in to cornice should not be too expensive if you find right plasterer for the job cheers

Pargeters are exterior renderers you need an experienced cornice plasterer to access damage and either making good or removal and replacement he should be able to take a mould or template a run a section on a bench

Repair would be time consuming expensive and pointless it would all crack again
Take down all cornice plasterboard ceiling and skim
Fix any new coving or cornice of your choice
If the cornice has to match exactly a mould can be made from an existing piece but this can be very expensive if a new mould has to be made for that particular cornice
