hi,im looking to knock a 5ft opening from our front room to our dining room, would a 6ft steel box section support be ok?

its a weight bearing wall as it runs upto the roof and its a single brick wall but ive been told a concrete lintel might not be good enough and a steel box section would be fine but did not know if this was right in a 5ft opening, please help and thanks in advance Ok so I had a builder round who said a 6 x 4 steel rsj with 9 inches over hang would be more than adequate thanks for your help chaps

Not always boys, some councils have now listed over sized rsj's for set widths up to 3.5m no calcs needed. Crawley council being one of them. Rudy a quick call to your council should give you the definitive answer although it is likely that you will need calcs made

gone are the days when you can listen to hearsay regards structural works ,ypou MUST now get structural calcs done and submitted to the council before commencing works, failure to do this will cost you when you come to re-sell and you do not have the required documentation

Hi there are diferent conc beams and different steel beams a box section is one of the weaker ones you should get calcs done if not sure . a lot depends on what weight its carrying , also what the wall is made from and as to what work needs doing to the bearing ends,( which need to be min 150mm)

As everyone else has already said, you need a structural engineer to advise.no one else can safely say what type of beam you will need.In reply to your edited question,YOU STILL NEED AN ENGINEER.They will give you calculations to show building control if you want this work to be legitimate.A builder CANNOT give you any kind of guarantee that they have specified the right size beam. You could end up with a job that has serious safety issues.
